Retired and/or Senior Volunteer Services

RSVP has many unique opportunities to offer individuals in our community. All volunteers must be 55 years of age or older.

Program areas that need YOUR help are:

BoneBuilders:

BoneBuilders is an exercise class (2 times/week) led by seniors FOR seniors. Multiple sites exist in Wayne County. Group leaders receive initial and ongoing training. This is a year round commitment.

Tax Counseling Services:

Trained volunteers provide free tax preparation services for low-income seniors, and other low-income families. This volunteer service is seasonal, beginning in January and concluding in April. All volunteer tax preparers receive training provided by the IRS.

Medical Transportation Drivers:

These volunteers provide a much needed transportation service to seniors needing rides to/from medical appointments. Limited scholarships for drivers to attend the AARP sponsored '55 Alive' defensive driving course are available. Drivers also receive mileage reimbursement. This is an ongoing commitment.

Mentoring: Adult/Adult:

These volunteers provide one-to one or small group mentoring opportunities with residents living at the Success Center Transitional House in Sodus. Mentors receive initial and ongoing training. Mentors meet once a week with their mentees at the House in Sodus. A commitment of a minimum of 3 months is requested.

FoodSense:

These volunteers help promote, market and implement the existing FoodSense program. FoodSense is a cooperative food purchasing program that enables individuals to purchase a unit of food for $15.50 in cash or Food Stamps once a month. There is no income eligibility for the purchase of a FoodSense unit. Volunteers are needed to work in the Sodus and Lyons areas. This is an ongoing commitment.

Other Opportunities:

Senior Services staff are interested in talking with anyone who would be interested in becoming a RSVP volunteer. Other current opportunities include:

Finger Lakes Outlet Information Booth, Empire Farm Days (August).

Knit and Chat: Meet weekly in Newark, or home-based opportunities.

Line Dancers: Perform free for groups across Wayne County.

Friendly phone calls/visits.

Episodic events periodically throughout the year.
